I have now recovered from yesterdays crippling hangover and finally got chance to turn some of our mighty pig haul that I mentioned a couple of days ago into sausages. I would not consider myself to be an atypical British expat but there are a few things that I miss from the UK and one of them is a good old fashioned British Banger, Hungarians do make wonderful sausages but a traditional Pork and Sage sausage is not on the menu over here. They are remarkably easy to make with the right kit and a bit of practice although in the UK I am sure you will need to order natural skins from a local butcher...
We were only out collecting some of our pepper and chilli harvest two days ago and already we have a significant number of these chilli's going ripe again, we also seem to be in the same envious position with our tomato harvest! These particular chilli's have somewhat of a rather "rude name" in the Hungarian language, they are known as Kutya Fasza Paprika, which litterally translates as "Dog's Penis pepper" (use your imagination), however they are not just known as this colloquially but also in general conversation; certainly not something that would ever happen in the English language. After...
A change up for todays project 365 picture, one that was not even taken by me although I dialled in all of the information for Julie to take a picture of me up a tree harvesting cherries for this years brew of cherry wine! There is something about climbing trees that takes you back to childhood, well it does me anyway, I'm not sure children do that sort of thing anymore so I have no idea what folk my age will be doing in 30 years time that will remind them of their youth?
Todays monster collection was all about gathering cherries for the wonderful cherry wine that we make, it is I have to confess...
More explorations of our garden today for my 365 Project and the great news that project Alcohol is back on the rails! These rather delicate and tiny flowers are elderflower and are exceptionally common and really rather over looked to my mind, Elderflower bushes are "10 a penny" over here and whilst we have at least a dozen elderflower bushes on our plot they are easy to find in every hedgerow in Hungary. We are planning to be a little more expansive in the use of them this year and make some strawberry and elderflower jelly alongside some syrup to store for the year. However our favourite...
One of the undeniable truths of being an expat is that there are just some foods that you yearn after and I am no different, I would not necessarily describe myself as a "foodie" but I love to eat and I love to cook and as we grow some of the most fantastic produce it has ever been my pleasure to consume it is only natural that I eulogise it here.
Traditional Hungarian food is wonderful, it is rich and hearty fare that serves as fantastic fuel for a day working the land, but there are flavours from your upbringing that you dearly yearn for and there are but two options; "Red Cross" parcels from...
